However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time.Good (G), Good Plus (G+) A record in G or G+ condition can be played through without skipping. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear, and may be marred by a cutout hole, indentation, or cut corner.Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Picture sleeves and inner sleeves will have some slight wear, slightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. The label may have some ringwear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are ok. ![]() Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have light scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Defects should be more of a cosmetic nature, not affecting the actual playback as a whole. The same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters and lyric sleeves.Very Good+ (VG+) A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cutouts, or other noticeable defects. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. The vinyl will play perfectly, with no imperfections during playback. ![]() Should be used sparingly as a grade, if at all.Near Mint (NM) A nearly perfect record. It’s a perfect wrap-up to a strong album, leaving the listener wanting more as the last note fades.īONUS: A year after Ronstadt recorded it, Bonoff included her own version of the song on her eponymous debut album. An aching song of need, it allows the singer to stretch into a near torch mode, passionately soaring from a whisper to a scream and back. The finest of that trio is Someone to Lay Down Beside Me, one of Ronstadt’s best performances on disc. That album also included three numbers by a fine singer and songwriter, Karla Bonoff. The latter provided the title track for her 1976 album Hasten Down the Wind. As her career took off in the mid-70s, she also provided early American radio exposure to a number of songwriters including Elvis Costello and Warren Zevon. A magnificent singer and interpreter, Ronstadt has an uncanny knack for finding the perfect songs to record. ![]() Today’s song is Someone to Lay Down Beside Me by Linda Ronstadt. ![]()
